Civil engineering and sustainable building

Creating the buildings and major structures of tomorrow to serve society and innovating to preserve the environment

Presentation of the field

“Creating the buildings and major infrastructure projects of tomorrow to serve people and nature, innovating for biodiversity”

Génie civil & bâtiment durable

The construction industry is undergoing significant changes in its various trades and is now facing an increasingly competitive environment. New challenges must be addressed: the use of new collaborative digital tools (BIM, LEAN C) and Artificial Intelligence (generative design), which enable greater innovation and the search for new solutions; the necessary ecological transition, including changes in material properties and climate change; and the economic viability of projects, among others. Among the challenges to be addressed are: selecting the right materials for the right applications; optimizing structures to conserve materials; optimizing buildings’ energy consumption; finding alternative materials—such as low-carbon cements, bio-based materials (wood), and massive masonry; developing the circular economy through waste recovery and recycling; and eco-designing bio-inspired structures.

The Civil Engineering and Sustainable Building area of excellence comprises eight specialized tracks and trains more than 300 students each year. Each track is supported by strong academic and industrial partnerships that ensure cutting-edge training to meet these challenges and “create the buildings and major structures of tomorrow to serve society and innovate to preserve the environment.”

GENERAL ENGINEER

At the end of the core curriculum for the Generalist Engineer programme, 4 options (including 2 dual degree course) are offered in the field of excellence of Civil Engineering and Sustainable Building.

GENERAL ENGINEER, INFRASTRUCTURE AND MAJOR CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS SPECIALIZATION

Based on a foundation of complementary knowledge in several areas of civil engineering (civil engineering materials, structural analysis, and the design and construction of structures), this track offers specialized training for careers in engineering design firms (structural engineer or methods engineer), technical inspection, or as a site supervisor or project manager. The track explicitly addresses the interaction between structures and soils, infrastructure rehabilitation, and marine structures.

Double degree

Each year, a dozen students enroll in a three-year dual-degree program that leads to dual expertise in engineering and architecture :

  • Master’s in “Civil Engineering and Architecture” from the University of Liège.
  • Master’s in “Civil Engineering and Architecture” from the University of Mons.
  • State Diploma in Architecture from the École Nationale Supérieure de Montpellier.

These dual degrees enable recent graduates to design buildings and engineering structures that are both aesthetically and technically successful and that integrate seamlessly into their surroundings with minimal environmental impact.
