Civil engineering and sustainable building

Creating the buildings and major structures of tomorrow to serve society and innovating to preserve the environment

building

The field of construction is undergoing major changes in its professions and is now faced with an increasingly competitive environment. New challenges have to be taken up: the use of new collaborative digital tools (BIM, LEAN C) and Artificial Intelligence (generative design) allowing for more innovation and the search for new solutions; the necessary ecological transition with the variation in the properties of materials and climatic changes as well as the economic balance of projects. Among the challenges to be met are choosing the right materials in the right places; optimising structures to save materials; optimising the energy consumption of buildings, finding alternative materials: low-carbon cements, bio-sourced materials (wood), solid masonry, etc.; developing the circular economy: recovery of waste, recycling, etc.; eco-design of bio-inspired structures.... The Civil Engineering and Sustainable Building field of excellence includes eight specialised courses and trains more than 300 students each year. Each course is supported by strong academic and industrial partnerships that ensure cutting-edge training to meet these challenges and "Create the buildings and major structures of tomorrow to serve society and innovate to preserve the environment".

GENERAL ENGINEER

At the end of the core curriculum for the Generalist Engineer programme, 3 options (including 1 dual degree course) are offered in the field of excellence of Civil Engineering and Sustainable Building.

Generalist engineer, infrastructure and major works option

Based on a foundation of complementary knowledge in several areas of civil engineering (GC materials, calculation, design and construction), this option offers a more in-depth approach to careers in public works design offices (calculation engineer, methods engineer, control engineer) or to careers as works managers and project managers.

Programme of the option

Basics of the project - 58H

  • Basics of the construction project
  • Basics of design and calculation
  • Hydraulic binders - Common concretes

Geology and geotechnics for engineers - 56H

  • Engineering geology
  • Soil mechanics
  • Soil-structure interactions, building foundations

Mechanics of structures and materials - 70H

  • Mechanics of structures
  • Calculation and design of reinforced concrete building structures
  • Calculation and design of steel structures

Building and public works structures - 68H

  • Design and execution of buildings
  • Earthworks and roads

Mechanics of structures and materials - 56H

  • Calculation and design of civil engineering structures in reinforced concrete
  • Calculation and design of mixed steel and concrete structures
  • Calculation and design of pre-stressed concrete civil engineering structures

Structural Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering - 58H

  • Study of buildings in plasticity
  • Structural dynamics
  • Earthquake engineering

Design and construction of civil engineering structures - 53H

  • Soil-structure interactions: slope stability, foundations, retaining walls
  • Hyperstatic pre-stressed concrete for engineering structures
  • Bridge design

Design and construction of large civil engineering structures - 47H

Double degree

Each year, a dozen students enrol in a three-year dual degree course that leads to a dual competence in engineering and architecture:

  • Master's degree "Civil Engineer Architect" from the University of Liege.
  • Master "Civil Engineer Architect" of the University of Mons.
  • State diploma in architecture from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Montpellier.
  • Diploma in Urban Engineering with the Ecole des Ingénieurs de la Ville de Paris (EIVP)

These double degrees enable young graduates to design aesthetically and technically successful buildings and engineering structures.
