DOREE: Diagnosis of Organic Pollutants, Water Resources and the Environment

Presentation

The DOREE platform (Diagnosis of Organic Pollutants, Water Resources and the Environment) is located on the IMT Mines Alès site.

It is part of the HydroSciences Montpellier Unit, Emerging Contaminants team, and as such is part of the UNESCO ICIREWARD centre. It contributes to meeting Sustainable Development Goals 3 (Good health and well-being) and 6 (Clean water and sanitation).

The platform is dedicated to the analysis of organic pollutants, particularly emerging ones, at trace levels in aquatic and environmental environments. In particular, specific expertise has been developed in passive sampling and analysis of organic pollutants in aqueous environments.

It includes equipment for physico-chemical characterisation of environmental media and, in particular, diagnosis of organic pollutants in these media. This platform is based on infrastructures that enable a complete analytical process to be carried out on aqueous, solid or biological matrices: taking samples in spot mode or by passive sampling, then preparing the environmental samples up to their instrumental analysis.

Main equipments

Our equipment is spread over two technical platforms:

Sample preparation :

One room is dedicated to the preparation of environmental samples prior to the instrumental analysis stage. It is equipped with :

  • Laminar flow hoods,
  • Extraction systems for water treatment (solid phase extraction), pre-treatment systems (drying, grinding, etc.) or treatment of solid environmental samples such as sediments, soils or plants (pressurised fluid extraction),
  • Solvent evaporation systems,
  • A calibration pilot for passive sampling,
  • Various laboratory equipment (pH meter, conductivity meter, balances, micropipettes, etc.).

Analytical instrumentation :

Two other rooms are each dedicated to instrumental trace analysis of organic contaminants.

  • Liquid chromatograph coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MSMS) - (Micromass Quatro microTM, Waters)
  • Gas chromatograph coupled to mass spectrometry (GC/MS) - (Varian 450-GC- Varian 240 MS, equipped with a pyrolysis system)

Offer and areas of appplication

  • Partnership research,
  • Training,
  • Scientific expertise,
  • Feasibility studies,
  • Deployment and support.

In the following fields of application: sampling and physico-chemical analysis of organic pollutants in environmental and industrial environments.

Knowledge and scientific expertise

  • Expertise in monitoring emerging pollutants and transformation products,
  • Analysis of all compartments of aquatic environments: water (surface, urban and industrial discharges), sediments and biota,
  • Specific developments in quantitative analysis of organic substances in environmental or industrial environments,
  • Support in interpreting data, in relation to regulatory aspects.

Recent projects

The aim of the study was to characterise the pollution from pesticides historically (chlordecone) and currently used at 10 sites spread across the catchment area. Passive samplers were used to achieve greater representativeness and to take account of local constraints.

Pesticides used on local crops, drug residues and their processing products were monitored in samples of surface water and wastewater from the Gard and Hérault rivers. Passive samplers were used to measure low levels of contamination, tailored to the presence of these substances*.

Recycled plastic materials were studied with a view to their reuse. A specific analytical method was developed for this material, followed by analyses to measure phthalates and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in order to determine the level of residual presence of these substances in these materials.

As part of the Occitanie region's READYNOV "ECODREDGE MED II" project, an analytical method has been developed to characterise the presence of PAHs and PCBs (Polychlorinated Biphenyls) in source sediments and their recovery products (different types of concrete).
